Area high school volleyball 9/3/13: Beavers go 3-1 at tournament

ALEXANDRIA -- Kynedi Cheeseman had 13 kills to lead Hanson to a 2-0 victory over Marion at the Hanson quad tournament Saturday.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-22.

Hailey Doyle had three kills and 11 assists for the Beavers (3-1), Leah Marsh chipped in with 15 digs, while Sydney Dodd had five kills, four digs and four aces.

Kaitlyn Engbrecht and Renae VanderZee led the way for Marion. VanderZee had 16 assists, while Engbrecht had 15 assists and three digs. Erica Schoenwald chipped in with two kills and one block.

Hanson hosts Sanborn Central/Woonsocket today, while Marion (1-1-1) hosts Gayville-Volin today.

Hanson 2, Mitchell Christian 1

ALEXANDRIA -- The Hanson volleyball team defeated Mitchell Christian 25-14, 27-25, 25-18 at the Hanson quad.

The Beavers were led by Kynedi Cheeseman, who had seven kills, seven digs and five aces. Katlyn Schroeder had seven kills for the Beavers, while Emily Weber had two blocks. Emily Brown and Hailey Doyle had nine and eight assists, respectively. Leah Marsh added 13 digs.

Emily Schrag led Mitchell Christian (0-3) with 43 assists, six digs and one aces. Abbie Reynen had six kills, one block, eight digs and three aces, and Cassidy Graham had two kills and 14 kills.

The Golden Eagles play Sunshine Bible Academy today in Miller.

Ethan 2, Mitchell Christian 1

ALEXANDRIA -- The Ethan Rustlers defeated Mitchell Christian in 2-1 at the Hanson quad.

Sets scores were 25-23, 28-30, 25-17.

Ethan was led by Darbi Gustafson, who had five kills and five digs. Ethan also got contributions from Anna Mueller, Kacey Bartscher and Danika Pollreisz. Mueller had six kills and four aces, Bartscher recorded six digs and Pollreisz had four aces.

Cassidy Graham had five kills, one block and 10 digs to lead MCS. Ashley Schmidt had five kills, three digs and one ace, while Lindsay Thompson had six assists and 11 digs. Emily Schrag had 32 assists, seven digs and one ace for MCS.

Hanson 2, Ethan 1

ALEXANDRIA -- The Hanson volleyball team defeated Ethan 26-24, 25-27, 25-17 at the Hanson quad.

Leading the way for Hanson was Emily Brown, Leah Marsh and Kynedi Cheeseman. Brown had 12 assists and two aces, Marsh had 22 digs and Cheeseman recorded nine kills and 13 digs. Sydney Dodd added seven kills for the Beavers, while Hailey Doyle had 10 assists.

Anna Mueller led Ethan, recording eight kills, one block, two digs and one ace. Holley Lindeman had 17 assists, one block, one dig and two aces for the Rustlers, while Darbi Gustafson had four kills, three blocks, two digs and one ace.

Marion 1, Ethan 1

ALEXANDRIA -- The Marion and Ethan volleyball teams played to a 1-1 tie at the Hanson quad.

Set scores were 24-26, 25-19.

Erica Schoenwald led the way for Marion, recording one kill, two blocks, four assists and two digs. Kaitlyn Engbrecht had one block, one assist and two digs, Michele Schoenwald, had two assists and one dig. Devin Nelson had eight assists.

Ethan (1-2) was led by Anna Mueller, who had four kills and two digs. Kacey Bartscher chipped in with one kill and two aces, while Danika Pollriesz had two digs and Hailey Lindeman had seven assists.

Marion 2, Mitchell Christian 0

ALEXANDRIA -- The Marion volleyball team defeated Mitchell Christian in two sets at the Hanson quad.

Set scores were 27-25, 25-21.

Devin Nelson led the way for Marion, recording 10 assists, two digs and one kill. Kaitlyn Engbrecht chipped in with two kills and four digs, while Erica Schoenwald had one block and two assists. Renae Kayser added one kill, two assists and two digs for Marion.

Mitchell Christian was led by Cassidy Graham. The outside hitter recorded five kills, six digs, one block and two aces. Emily Schrag had two kills, nine assists, two digs and four aces, while Abbie Reynen added five kills and four digs.

Bon Homme 3, Avon 0

TYNDALL -- The Bon Homme volleyball team defeated the Avon Pirates in three sets Saturday.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 25-13.

Bon Homme (1-0) was led by Emily Pechous. Pechous had three aces, five kills and seven digs. Kelsey Sutera chipped in with five kills and 10 digs, Allie Adams had 25 assists for the Cavaliers and Vanessa Navratil had 13 digs.

Ariana Oorlog led Avon with two aces, seven kills and eight digs. Amanda Reiff led the Pirates in digs with nine.

Avon (0-1) hosts Parkston today. Bon Homme, which also won the JV game 3-0, takes on Andes Central today in Tyndall.

Burke/South Central 3, Colome 0

COLOME -- Burke/South Central earned its first win of the season after beating Colome 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 Saturday.

Burke/South Central's Sierra Votaw led all players with 10 kills, and Jenny Higgins tallied 11 digs. Shailyn Schweigert had nine assists in the win.

For Colome, Sarah Shippy and Mariah Kinzer each recorded four kills, while Taylor Hrabanek had three assists.

Colome (0-1) plays Dakota Christian Thursday in New Holland, while Burke/South Central (1-0) host Winner today in Burke.

Winner 3, Stanley County

WINNER -- 25-4, 25-6, 25-12.

Lindsey Calhoon had 12 kills, Tawny Sherman had 11 kills and Cassidy Hanson had seven kills, four aces and was 12-for-12 in serving for Winner. Sara Husher had 23 assists and four aces. Emily Richey had nine digs and Kelsey Bertram added eight digs and was 17-for-17 in serving. Kennede Mathis also had a block in the win.

Winner (1-0) plays at Burke/South Central today in Burke.

Mobridge-Pollock 3, Chamberlain 0

CHAMBERLAIN -- Ellie Rabenberg had three aces and 10 assists to lift Mobridge-Pollock over Chamberlain 3-0 Saturday.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-17, 28-26.

Becca Martin had 18 assists and Aundrea Kramer had nine digs for Mobridge-Pollock.

Chamberlain was led by Shelby Schindler, who had nine kills and three blocks. Kennedy Wagner recorded seven kills, 10 assists and eight digs, Sarah Knust had 12 digs and Ilaria Giuli added three blocks.

Chamberlain (0-1) Stanley County today in Fort Pierre.

Wagner 2, McCook Central/Montrose 1

PARKSTON -- The Wagner volleyball team defeated McCook Central/Montrose 22-25, 25-9, 25-14 Saturday at a tournament in Parkston.

Kim Koupal led all players with eight kills, Ali Kuca had seven and Gina Soukup had five for Wagner. Emily Brunsing tallied four blocks, Brooklyn Tolliver had seven digs and five aces and Kayla Deurmier added 17 assists.

For the Fighting Cougars, C.J. Ristesund and Marissa Painter each had four kills. Annie Boddicker and Nicole Roth had two aces apiece.

Wagner (2-2) plays Platte-Geddes today in Platte, while McCook Central/Montrose (0-4) hosts Chester Area today in Montrose.

Parkston 2, McCook Central/Montrose 0

PARKSTON -- Parkston swept McCook Central/Montrose 2-0 during a tournament Saturday.

Set score was 25-20, 25-17.

The Fighting Cougars were led by Brianna Painter with eight digs and Laura Klaudt had four assists.

No stats were reported for any of Parkston's matches. In the tournament, the Trojans also had losses against Arlington and Northwestern.

Parkston (2-2) plays at Avon today.

Parkston 2, Wagner 0

PARKSTON -- The Parkston Trojans defeated Wagner 25-22, 25-15 in the tournament.

Wagner's Kim Koupal had six kills, while Gina Soukup tallied five. Brooklyn Tolliver recorded seven digs and Kayla Deurmier had 14 assists.

No stats were reported for Parkston.

Arlington 2, Wagner 0

PARKSTON -- Arlington beat Wagner 25-23, 25-14 during the tournament in Parkston Saturday.

Arlington's Samantha Boeck had a game-high eight kills and Brett Heuer recorded 17 assists in the win.

For Wagner, Gina Soukup had a team-high five kills and 15 digs. Brooklyn Tolliver added 11 digs and Kayla Deurmier had 14 assists.

Wagner 2, Northwestern 1

PARKSTON -- Gina Soukup recorded 10 kills to help the Wagner volleyball team defeat Northwestern 2-1 Saturday.

Set scores were 25-22, 11-25, 25-22.

Kim Koupal recorded 15 digs, while Brooklyn Tolliver and Kayla Deurmier each had 13 for Wagner. Deurmier also had 21 assists in the win.

Northwestern 2, McCook Central/Montrose 0

PARKSTON -- Brianna Painter recorded 11 digs in McCook Central/Montrose's 2-0 loss to Northwestern Saturday.

Set scores were 25-10, 25-17.

C.J. Ristesund had a team-best four kills, while Danielle Hansen had three. Ristesund also had nine digs and Annie Boddicker added eight in the loss.

Northwestern was led by Jordon Peterson with 10 kills and four aces.

Arlington 2, McCook Central/Montrose 0

PARKSTON -- Samantha Boeck had nine kills to help lead Arlington over McCook Central/Montrose 2-0 Saturday.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-18.

Brooklyn Judstra had six digs and Brett Heuer had 18 assists in the win.

For the Fighting Cougars, Brianna Painter had 11 digs, while Laura Klaudt tallied eight assists.

Winner 3, Stanley County 0

WINNER — The Winner volleyball team opened its season with a three-set victory over Stanley County. Set scores were 25-4, 25-6, 25-12.
