Area high school basketball roundup: Ethan’s Gustafson scores 1,000th point

ETHAN — Darbi Gustafson had a double-double and scored her 1,000th point to help the Ethan girls’ basketball team beat Corsica/Stickney 53-44 Friday.

Gustafson scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Ellie Hohn added a team-high 20 points, while Rachel Hawkins chipped in with 10 points and seven assists.

The Rustlers were 20-of-41 from the field and 11-of-19 from the free-throw line. Ethan also won the JV game 45-12.

Hope Menning led Corsica/Stickney with a game-high 23 points. Micayla Bamberg had 5 rebounds and Brianna Kuyper had eight assists.

The Jaguars were 17-of-28 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line.

Ethan (9-3) plays Freeman Academy Tuesday in Freeman, while CS (7-6) plays Viborg-Hurley Monday in Viborg.

SCOTLAND — Amber Alvey had 15 points and four assists in Scotland’s 55-43 victory over Platte-Geddes Friday in high school girls’ basketball action.

Alex Conrad had 13 points, Carley Skorepa added 12 points and seven rebounds and Hannah Mogck scored 10 in the win. Scotland shot 42 percent from the line and 47 percent from behind the arc.

Josie DeGroot tallied 13 points and six rebounds, while Alexis Peterson had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Black Panthers, who shot 37 percent from the field.

Scotland (4-7) won the JV game 36-26 and plays Bridgewater-Emery Tuesday in Bridgewater. Platte-Geddes (4-8) plays at Parkston Tuesday.

PRESHO — The Colome Cowgirls defeated Gregory 39-23 Friday in the second round of the Southern Plains tournament.

Mariah Kinzer had eight points and Colby Taggert had seven for Colome, which was 13-of-14 at the line.

Gregory’s Courtney Opbroek scored a game-high 11 points. The Gorillas were 5-of-11 from the line.

Colome (4-10) plays in the tournament today in Kadoka, while Gregory (1-11) hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour Tuesday.

Lyman 31

PRESHO — Burke/South Central’s girls’ basketball team beat Lyman 42-31 Friday at the Southern Plains tournament.

Allison Sebern recorded a team-best 11 points and Micaela Frank added 10 for the Cougars, who were 9-of-17 from the line.

Lyman’s Bailey Almond scored 11 points and Ashley Mortenson had six points and five rebounds. Lyman was 7-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Burke/South Central (9-4) and Lyman (7-4) play in the tournament today in Kadoka.

SALEM — Brianna Painter scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help the McCook Central/Montrose girls’ basketball team beat Flandreau 58-48 Friday.

Rachael Laetsch chipped in with 16 points four rebounds and three assists. Nicole Roth added nine points and 13 rebounds for the Fighting Cougars, who were 23-of-64 from the field and 18-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Flandreau was led by Shanaya Lunday, who finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Marissa Hare added nine points for Flandreau, which was 20-of-55 from the field.

MCM (6-3) plays Freeman Monday in Freeman, while Flandreau (6-4) hosts Parker today in Flandreau.

CANISTOTA — Kynedi Cheeseman scored 18 points and eight assists to help the Hanson girls’ basketball team beat Canistota 62-41 Friday.

Katlyn Schroeder chipped in with 14 points, while Leah Marsh had 10 points and eight assists for the Beavers.

Hanson was 26-of-55 from the field and 8-of-15 from the free-throw line. The Beavers won the JV game 46-11.

Kalli Ortman led the way for Canistota with 18 points. Morgan Larson chipped in with 10 points. The Hawks were 17-of-56 from the field and 8-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Hanson (12-1) plays Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Monday in Forestburg, while Canistota (8-4) plays Mitchell Christian Monday at Mitchell Christian School.

MENNO — Three players scored in double figures to help the Freeman girls’ basketball team beat Menno 55-31 Friday.

Erica Sage and Nicole Saarie led the way with 14 points for Freeman. Cailey Roth added 10 points, while Mady Pravecek had 10 rebounds.

The Flyers were 27-of-60 from the field and had 24 rebounds. Freeman also won the JV game 32-29.

Menno was led by Kylee Kessler, who had 12 points and six rebounds. Abby Herrboldt added eight points, while Christina Herrboldt had six rebounds. Menno was 11-of-48 from the field.

Menno (1-10) plays Bridgewater-Emery Monday in Emery, while Freeman (10-3) hosts McCook Central/Montrose Monday in Freeman.

PINE RIDGE — The No. 4 Winner girls’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday after falling to No. 2 Pine Ridge 61-59.

Cassidy Hanson had 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Kelsey Bertram added 13 and eight rebounds in the loss. The Warriors were 16-of-57 from the field and 22-of-29 from the line.

Shaylene Richard had 21 points in the win, while Santana White Dress had eight points. The Thorpes were 24-of-69 from the field and 8-of-15 from the line.

Winner (11-1) hosts Miller Monday, while Pine Ridge (12-1) hosts Todd County Thursday.

TYNDALL — The Parkston girls’ basketball team earned its third win of the season Thursday after beating Bon Homme 44-40.

Halli Heisinger recorded a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds and Sadie Schoenfelder added nine points for Parkston. The Trojans outrebounded Bon Homme 24-23.

Bon Homme’s Kelsey Sutera scored a team-high nine points, Liz Kubal added eight points and eight rebounds and Shawna Rezac had eight points.

Parkston (3-8) hosts Platte-Geddes Tuesday, while Bon Homme (3-8) plays Dakota Christian Saturday in New Holland.

Chamberlain 79,

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 68

PLANKINTON — Skyler Bertram scored a team-best 28 points to lead Chamberlain over Mount Vernon/Plankinton 79-68 Friday in high school boys’ basketball action.

Reuben Estes scored 26 points and Tiegen Pribe added 10 points for the Cubs, who were 29-of-45 from the field and 13-of-18 from the line. Chamberlain outrebounded MVP 26-19.

MVP’s Deric Denning had a game-high 34 points. Nick Lawson added 11 points for the Titans, who were 24-of-50 from the field and 11-of-12 from the line.

Chamberlain (8-2) plays Clark/Willow Lake in the Hanson Classic today at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, while MVP (7-4) plays at Wagner Tuesday.

BRIDGEWATER — Jerret Weber had a team-high 20 points as the Bridgewater-Emery boys’ basketball team defeated Gayville-Volin 55-47 Friday.

Wade Miller scored 14 points and seven steals and Sam Arend brought down nine rebounds for the Huskies, who were 19-of-48 from the field and 15-of-20 from the line. The Huskies had 30 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Brandon Van Osdel had 13 points in the loss. GV was 17-of-52 from the field, 10-of-24 from the line and had 20 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

The Huskies (5-6) plays Alcester-Hudson Thursday in Alcester, while GV (1-9) hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour today in Gayville.

MARION — The Marion boys’ basketball team fell to Chester Area 60-33 Friday.

Nick Gortmaker led the way for Marion with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Jacob Wuertz added eight points for the Bears, who were 13-of-43 from the field and 5-of-11 from the field.

No individual stats were submitted for Chester Area.

Platte-Geddes was led by Carter Dykstra, who had 17 points and six rebounds. Coby Johnson added 10 points and five rebounds for the Black Panthers, who were 13-of-33 from the field and 4-of-10 from free-throw-line.

Geno Burshiem and Guy Zephier each had a game-high 16 points for Flandreau. Tim Parsley chipped in with 14 points.

Matthew Fee and Kyler Hansen each led the way for MCM with nine points. Will Gottlob chipped in with 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Fighting Cougars were 17-of-49 from the field and 5-of-9 from the free-throw line.

MCM (5-5) plays Sisseton today at the Hanson boys’ Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Flandreau (7-2) plays Parker today in Flandreau.
