Area high school basketball roundup 2/27/13: Ethan, Hanson advance to title game

Three Ethan boys scored in double figures to help the Rustlers defeat Menno 58-42 in a District 11B boys' basketball semifinal game Tuesday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Blake Bartscher led the way for Ethan with 22 points, while Jace Connor and Anthony Huber each chipped in with 11.

Connor and Huber also tallied nine rebounds apiece. Ethan was 24-of-59 from the field and grabbed 39 total rebounds.

Menno was led by Austin Herrboldt, who finished with 15 points. Dylan Lehr added 10 points and Caleb Preszler grabbed eight rebounds.

Menno was 14-of-55 from the field and committed 13 turnovers.

Ethan (12-7) advances to play Hanson in the District 11B championship at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Menno ends its season 8-13.

Hanson 49, Avon 36

Jordan Marquardt had 20 points and Matt Huber added 13 in Hanson's 49-36 win over Avon Tuesday in a District 11B boys' basketball game at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Marquardt had three assists, Aaron Wenande had three steals and Trey Persson had seven rebounds.

Hanson was 10-of-29 from the field, 29-of-35 from the free-throw line and had six turnovers.

Avon was led by Brandon Kocmich's 13 points and seven rebounds. Logan Mudder had five rebounds and four assists and Logan Powers had five rebounds.

Avon was 10-of-22 from the field, 13-of-18 from the free-throw line and had 11 turnovers.

Hanson (15-6) plays Ethan Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell for the District 11B championship. Avon ends its season 6-15.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 42

BURKE -- Tyler Frank scored 32 points and Sam Hazen recorded a double-double to help South Central beat Tripp-Delmont/Armour in a District 12B boys' basketball semifinal game Tuesday.

Hazen finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars. South Central was 23-of-43 from the field, 9-of-17 from the free-throw line and grabbed 24 rebounds.

Cody Hrdlicka scored a team-high 15 points for Tripp-Delmont/Armour, while Trevor Payer added 10.

The Nighthawks were 15-of-40 from the field and committed 10 turnovers.

South Central (19-2) advances to the play Dakota Christian in the District 12B championship at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. TDA finishes the season 8-13.

West Central 45

SALEM -- Will Gottlob recorded a double-double to lead McCook Central/Montrose to a 62-45 victory over West Central in the quarterfinals of the District 9A boys' basketball tournament Tuesday in Salem.

Gottlob finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jacob Heumiller also scored 17 points for the Fighting Cougars. Bill Kapperman and Brandon Reif chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

West Central was led by Cody Russell, who finished with nine points. West Central shot 30-of-55 from the field and was 1-of-6 from the free throw line.

McCook Central/Montrose (16-5) advances to face Mount Vernon/Plankinton in the District 9A finals Friday. West Central ends its season 2-19.

Parkston 53, Wagner 45

PARKSTON -- Parkston's Zach Scott had 14 points and Spencer Lucas had 13 points and nine rebounds in a 53-43 win over Wagner in the District 10A boys' basketball tournament Tuesday.

Parkston's Kyle Hohn had 12 points.

Parkston was 17-of-56 from the field, 14-of-25 from the free-throw line and had seven turnovers.

Wagner's Will Hollmann had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Red Raiders were 17-of-47 from the field, 5-of-8 from the foul line and had 14 turnovers.

Parkston (12-9) plays Platte-Geddes Friday in Platte for the District 10A championship. Wagner ends its season at 10-11.

Dakota Christian 55, Colome 40

NEW HOLLAND -- Darren Fallis had 26 points and six rebounds to lead Dakota Christian past Colome 55-40 in the District 12B boys' basketball tournament Tuesday.

Jake Spoelstra had six rebounds and four assists for the Cadets, who picked up their 11th win of the year.

The Cadets were 21-of-40 from the field, 7-of-19 from the free-throw line and had six turnovers.

Colome's Terrance Kinzer had 14 points and Paul Temple had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Cohl Ratermann had nine rebounds and Reed Harter had five assists.

Colome was 17-of-59 from the field, 5-of-7 from the foul line and had 10 turnovers.

DC (11-10) plays South Central for the District 12B championship at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Colome ends its season 9-13.

HURON -- James Valley Christian had four players score in double figures to claim a 92-35 win over Wessington Springs in semifinal round of the District 9B boys' basketball tournament Tuesday.

Nathan Wedel led the Vikings with 17 points and nine rebounds, Andrew Ulvested added 15 points, Alex Waldner had 14 points and Adam Hofer scored 10 points.

The Spartans were led by Braden Jones with 11 points. Wessington Springs (5-17) made 11 of 58 field goals for 19 percent and 4 of 8 free throws. The Spartans grabbed 29 rebounds and had three steals and 21 turnovers.

JVC takes on Wolsey-Wessington Thursday for the District 9B championship in Huron.

Sanborn Central /Woonsocket 26

HURON -- Wolsey-Wessington raised its record to 20-1 with a 64-26 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in the District 9B tournament Tuesday.

The Warbirds were led by Lorenzo Williams with 18 points, followed by Ryan Sprecher with 12 points and Hayden Hofer with 11 points.

Davion Brooks scored 10 points for the Blackhawks, and Nick Miller scored eight points to attain 1,000 points in his career.

SCW was 11-of-34 for 32 percent from the floor and 4-of-15 for 27 percent from the free-throw line. The Blackhawks had 20 rebounds and turned the ball over 15 times.

The Warbirds take on James Valley Christian in the District 9B championship Thursday in Huron. The Blackhawks finished the season with a 14-7 record.

Bridgewater-Emery 38

TEA -- Alex Robertson scored 20 points to lead Canistota to a 51-38 win over Bridgewater-Emery in a District 7B semifinal matchup Tuesday.

The Hawks were also led by Cody Bunger and Jason Van Winkle with 10 points apiece.

Canistota (21-1) was 17-of-42 for 41 percent from the floor and 5-of-9 for 56 percent from the free-throw line. The Hawks outrebounded Bridgewater-Emery 28-15.

Jacob Schweitzer scored 16 points for the Huskies and Clayton Dye followed with 15 points.

The Huskies were 14-of-30 for 38 percent from the field and 7-of-8 for 88 percent from the free-throw line.

Canistota plays in the District 9B championship game Friday in Tea. The Huskies end their season at 6-14.

Platte-Geddes 62, Bon Homme 26

PLATTE -- The Platte-Geddes Black Panthers jumped to a 26-6 halftime lead and went on to defeat Bon Homme 62-26 in a District 10A game Tuesday.

Coby Johnson led the Platte-Geddes with 18 points and Hunter Johnson followed with 10 points.

The Black Panthers (14-7) were 24-of-41 for 59 percent from the floor and 10-of-20 from the free-throw line. Platte-Geddes pulled down 40 rebounds.

The Cavaliers were paced by Hunter Young with six points. Bon Homme was 10-of-44 for 23 percent from the field and 7-of-18 for 39 percent from the free-throw line.

Platte-Geddes hosts Parkston for the District 10A championship Friday. Bon Homme finished its season with a record of 6-14.

Howard 53, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 45

HOWARD -- Steve Larsen scored 23 points to lead Howard to a 53-45 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in a District 4B tournament game Tuesday.

Howard was also paced by Landon Laible and Andrew Schwader with 12 points apiece.

The Tigers (7-14) were 18-of-42 for 43 percent from the floor and 12-of-27 for 44 percent from the free-throw line. Howard held a 34-22 rebounding advantage over ORR.

The Tigers play Colman-Egan for the District 4B championship Saturday in Brookings.

WINNER -- Winner came from behind to defeat Todd County 71-56 in a District 13A semifinal battle Tuesday.

Ben Connot scored 26 points and Tanner Fritz added 23 points for the Warriors. Isiah Old Lodge recorded 11 points and eight rebounds in the contest.

Winner (11-8) was 20-of-46 for 44 percent from the floor and 26-of-33 for 79 percent from the free-throw line. The Warriors pulled down 28 rebounds.

Winner travels to play St. Francis for the District 13A championship game Thursday in Mission

COLTON -- Deric Denning scored 29 points and Kellam Karst followed with 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Mount Vernon/Plankinton to a 74-57 win over Tri-Valley in the District 9A boys' basketball tournament Tuesday.

Jared Long handed out six assists for the Titans.

The Mustangs were paced by Brett Page with 16 points and Brendon Boomsma with 13 points.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (14-7) plays McCook Central/Montrose for the District 9A championship Friday.

TEA -- Zach O'Keefe scored 22 points in Parker's 71-58 win over Freeman in District 7B semifinal game Tuesday.

Brennan Schmidt led the Flyers with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Shaun Becker had 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots.

Freeman was 19-of-49 for 39 percent from the floor and 16-of 23 for 70 percent from the free-throw line.

Freeman finished its season 12-9.
