Area high school basketball roundup 1/19/13: Scotland girls top Platte-Geddes

PLATTE -- Aisha Abbink scored 33 points for Scotland as the Highlanders defeated Platte-Geddes 71-60 in high school girls' basketball action Friday.

Kennidy Asche scored 15 points for Scotland and recorded eight rebounds and five steals. Carley Skorepa scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Scotland shot 41 percent from the field and made 19 free throws on 27 attempts for 70 percent. Scotland is 8-3 this season and hosts Bridgewater-Emery Tuesday.

Josie DeGroot led Platte-Geddes' scoring with 24 points and had six rebounds and five steals. Kelly Knudson recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Knudson pulled down nine rebounds and had six steals.

Brianna Erickson and Shelby Rabenberg each scored eight points for the Black Panthers, who shot 23 percent from the field. PG made 21 free throws in 28 times at the line for 75 percent.

Platte-Geddes is 9-3 and hosts Parkston Tuesday.

Flandreau 34, McCook Central/Montrose 29

FLANDREAU -- McCook Central/Montrose lost a three-quarter lead to drop a game to Flandreau 29-34 in girls' basketball action Friday.

Shanaya Lunday and Kelly Johanson scored 10 points apiece for Flandreau. Johanson and Keisha Jackson each recorded five rebounds.

Flandreau shot 37 percent from the field and 52 percent from the free-throw line. The Fliers recorded 25 rebounds and 22 turnovers.

Brianna Painter led the Fighting Cougars scoring with 13 points. Rachel Bartscher added seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jean Skoglund recorded six rebounds.

MCM shot 24 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line. The Fighting Cougars tallied 28 team rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Flandreau is 6-4 and plays at Parker today. MCM is 4-6 and hosts Freeman Monday in Salem.

MCM won the junior varsity game 25-15.

Freeman 59, Menno 37

FREEMAN -- Dina Soulek scored 20 points to lead Freeman over Menno 59-27 in a high school girls' basketball game Friday.

Erika Sage added eight points in the win. The Flyers shot 21-of-65 from the field and made 12 free throws in 16 attempts from the line.

Nicole Hinckley led the defensive effort with nine rebounds of the team's 30 total. Freeman, which also won the junior varsity game 59-27, turned the ball over 10 times.

Abby Herrboldt was Menno's leading scorer, recording 11 points. Kylee Kessler added nine points. The Wolves shot 10-of-32 from the field and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Tara Spencer and Kessler recorded six rebounds apiece to lead Menno's defense. The Wolves recorded 29 team rebounds and committed 19 turnovers.

Freeman is 7-4 with the win and hosts St. Francis Indian today. Menno is 2-9 this season and hosts Marion Friday.

Corsica/Stickney 42, Ethan 39

STICKNEY -- Hope Menning scored 23 points for Corsica/Stickney in a 42-39 win over Ethan Friday.

Jessica Hoogers scored 10 points for the Jaguars, who shot 16-of-30 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Mikayla Bamberg had seven of the team's 20 rebounds. The Jaguars, who are 5-8 with the win, tallied 23 turnovers.

Rachel Hawkins led Ethan's scoring with 11 points. Darby Gustafson had nine points and five rebounds for the Rustlers.

Ethan shot 16-of-30 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free-throw line. The Jaguars totaled 10 rebounds and 11 turnovers.

Corsica/Stickney plays Wolsey-Wessington today in Wolsey. Ethan, which won the junior varsity game 34-23, is 7-3 and hosts Freeman Academy Tuesday.

TYNDALL -- Winner picked up a win with a 54-48 defeat of Bon Homme in girls' basketball action Friday.

Cassidy Hanson scored 13 points for the Warriors and Kennede Mathis added 12. Hanson led the team in rebounding with seven. Kelsey Bertram recorded four assists and five steals.

Winner shot 23-of-54 from the field and connected on eight free throws in 16 attempts. The Warriors totaled 22 team rebounds and committed 11 turnovers.

Karlee Kozak was Bon Homme's leading scorer with 12 points. Kelsey Sutera scored 11 points and Emily Pechous scored 10. The Cavaliers shot 16-of-44 from the field and 14-of-20 from the free-throw line.

Sutera pulled down six rebounds for Winner and Jody Kriz grabbed five. The team tallied 21 total rebounds and turned the ball over 16 times.

Winner (6-5) plays at Miller Monday, while Bon Homme (5-8) plays Andes Central Thursday in Lake Andes.

Hanson 49, Canistota 27

ALEXANDRIA -- Hanson improved to 12-1 with a 49-27 win over Canistota Friday in a high school girls' basketball game.

Cassidy Graham scored 13 points and had four assists for the Beavers, who shot 22-of-45 from the field in the win. Kynedi Cheeseman added nine points. Hanson shot 4-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Sarah Kayser, Erika Nelson and Lindsi Dey each recorded four rebounds in the win. Cheeseman tallied four steals for the Beavers. Hanson totaled 22 team rebounds and committed 17 turnovers.

Jenny Hofer scored seven points to lead Canistota. The Hawks shot 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Canistota, who is 4-8 this season, plays Alcester-Hudson today in Alcester.

Hanson hosts Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Monday in Alexandria. The Beavers won the junior varsity game 34-12.

Andes Central 69, Marty Indian 37

LAKE ANDES -- Kellie Winckler and Jo Marie Garcia recorded double-doubles for Andes Central in the Eagles' 69-37 win over Marty Indian School in a high school girls' basketball game Friday.

Kellie Winckler scored 26 points for the Eagles, pulled down 11 rebounds, and recorded seven assists, three steals and three blocks. Jo Marie Garcia scored 17 points and led the team's rebounding with 12. Cybil Chytka scored 11 points and had three steals and Krista Winckler grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 26-of-48 from the field for 54 percent and made 16 free throws on 29 attempts for 55 percent. Andes Central recorded 49 team rebounds and turned the ball over 27 times.

Rose Zephier scored 11 points for Marty Indian and Apple Zephier added eight points.

Andes Central (6-3) hosts Bon Homme Thursday in Lake Andes, while Marty Indian (3-7) plays in the Dakota Oyate Challenge starting Thursday in Huron.

FLANDREAU -- McCook Central/Montrose came back from a half-time deficit to a tie score in regulation, but fell to Flandreau in overtime 61-55 in a high school boys' basketball game Friday.

Mitchell Foster led Flandreau's scoring with 18 points. Guy Zephier added 15 points and David Parsley scored 10. Jacob Patterson had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Flandreau shot 55 percent from the field and 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. The Fliers had 22 team rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Brandon Reif scored 15 points for McCook Central/Montrose. Billy Kapperman and Jake Heumiller recorded 11 points each. MCM shot 51 percent from the field and 10-of-18 from the free-throw line.

Flandreau is 6-5 and plays at Parker today. MCM is 6-4 and plays Platte-Geddes at the Hanson Classic today. MCM won the junior varsity 33-23.

CHAMBERLAIN -- Four Chamberlain players scored in double figures as the Cubs defeated Mount Vernon/Plankinton 68-56 in a high school boys' basketball game Friday.

Gage Basting was Chamberlain's leading scorer with 15 points. Davis Carson and Lane Schroyer each had 14 points. Reuben Estes added 11 points. Dalton Andera grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cubs.

Chamberlain shot 25-of-57 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. The Cubs had 22 team rebounds and 10 turnovers. Chamberlain is 9-2 and plays at Miller Tuesday.

Deric Denning and Kellam Karst each scored 16 points for MVP. The Titans shot 19-of-53 from the field and 13-of-17 from the free-throw line and tallied 20 team rebounds and 11 turnovers.

MVP is 6-4 and plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Monday in Tripp.

Chamberlain won the junior varsity game.
