Area basketball roundup: 12/30, Van Laecken scores 22 for MCS in win over Ipswich

PARKSTON — Alexa Van Laecken scored a game-high 22 points and had five steals and four rebounds as the Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team edged Ipswich 55-53 Saturday at the Parkston Classic.

Cassidy Graham added 11 points and Emily Reynen recorded nine points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Ipswich was led by Maci Gauer with 18 points, while Angela Heinz and Ansley Sargent each had 11.

Mitchell Christian (6-1) hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour Jan. 9, while Ipswich (3-2) plays Hitchcock-Tulare Friday.

Parkston 57, Centerville 55

PARKSTON — The Parkston girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 57-55 win over Centerville in the Parkston Classic Saturday.

Sadie Schoenfelder scored a game-high 20 points and had five rebounds for the Trojans. Justene Alley had 16 points and five rebounds and Halli Heisinger added 10 points. 

Centerville’s Shannon O’Malley had 17 points, Carleigh Oaster had 12 and Emilky Snyder added 11.

Parkston (1-4) hosts Winner Saturday, while Centerville (1-5) plays at Freeman Thursday.

Highmore-Harrold 54, Corsica/Stickney 48

PARKSTON — McKenzee Zilverberg had 16 points in Highmore-Harrold’s 54-48 win over Corsica/Stickney Saturday at the Parkston Classic.

Tyann Hamlin added 15 points in the win, while Sydney Cowan had 11 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Corsica/Stickney was led by Hope Menning and Micayla Bamberg with 15 points apiece. Brianna Kuyper had eight points and Jackie Dethlefsen brought down 10 rebounds.

The Jaguars (1-5) host Scotland Jan. 6 in Stickney, while Highmore-Harrold (7-0) plays Sully Buttes Jan. 10.

Ethan 68, Groton Area 60 (OT)

PARKSTON — The Ethan girls’ basketball team topped Groton Area 68-60 in overtime Saturday at the Parkston Classic.

Kacey Bartscher had a team-high 16 points for Ethan, while Darbi Gustafson had 14 points and nine rebounds. Rachel Hawkins recorded a double-double with 11 assists and 14 points.

Groton Area (5-1) was led by Courtney Kurtz with a game-high 24 points. Carly Wheeting had 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in the loss.

Ethan (4-1) hosts James Valley Christian Friday.

PARKSTON — Wagner’s Ali Kuca had 17 points and six rebounds in Wagner’s 60-44 loss to Tri-Valley Saturday in the Parkston Classic.

Emily Brunsing added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss, while Gina Soukup recorded four assists.

Sammy Kasowski recorded a game-high 20 points and Emma Johnson and Abby Heiberger each had 10 in the win. Heiberger and Kasowski each added eight rebounds for Tri-Valley (6-0).

Wagner (0-4) plays Hanson Jan. 7 in Alexandria.

PARKSTON — Hanson suffered its first loss of the season against Sully Buttes 73-51 Saturday at the Parkston Classic.

Kynedi Cheeseman had a team-best 15 points and eight rebounds, Sydney Dodd had 12 points and Katlyn Schroeder had 10 in the loss.

Chloe Lamb had 22 points and Remi Wientjes had 23 points and five assists for second-ranked Sully Buttes (3-0).

Hanson (5-1) hosts Wagner Jan. 7 in Alexandria.

Sami Reider also had 11 points in the win.

Roncalli’s Hailey Kline had 13 points and Paige Sommers had 11 in the loss.

PARKSTON — St. Thomas More was led by two players as it defeated Elk Point/Jefferson 65-41 Saturday at the Parkston Classic.

Alexys Swedlund and Ciara Duffy each had 15-point performances in the win. Moria Duffy added 10 rebounds.

Kelly Bertram recorded 13 points and Amy Zeller had eight points in the loss.

CHAMBERLAIN — The Chamberlain girls’ basketball team topped Belle Fourche 59-46 in the East/West Classic Saturday in Chamberlain.

The Cubs were led by Abbey Handel with 21 points and six rebounds. Kennedy Wagner finished with 17 points and six assists, while Dawson Munger added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Morgan Ham had a team-high 20 points for the Broncs.

Chamberlain (3-1) plays St. Francis Indian at 2 p.m. Saturday in Chamberlain.

WINNER — Josie DeGroot scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Platte-Geddes girls’ basketball team in a 71-52 win over St. Francis Indian Saturday in Winner.

Heidi Ringling added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Black Panthers, Brianna Erickson compiled 15 points, seven assists and six steals. Alexis Peterson had a team-high 10 rebounds in the win for PG.

The Warriors were led by Darien Quick Bear with 18 points.

PG (2-3) plays Lennox at 1 p.m. Saturday in Platte.

WINNER — The Winner girls’ basketball team topped Wall 76-37 Saturday in Winner.

The Warriors were led by Kelsey Bertram with 20 points, while Katie Mathis finished with 15. Cassidy Hanson added 10 points and team-high six rebounds in the win.

Wall was led by Savana Johnston with 13 points and five rebounds.

The Warriors (4-0) play Bon Home Friday in Winner.

WINNER — The Colome girls’ basketball team fell 57-37 to Newell at the Snowball Classic Saturday in Winner.

The Cowgirls were led by Rebecca Moorhead with 11 points, while Taylor Hrabanek added 10 points and six rebounds in the loss.

Newell was led by Tera Williamson, who scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Colome plays Jones County in the Holiday Classic at noon today in Colome.

Winner 52, Lyman 39

WINNER — Winner’s Brendan Harter had 18 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double to lead the Warriors to a 52-39 victory over Lyman Saturday in the Winner Classic.

Winner’s Nate Galbraith tallied 13 points. The Warriors shot 48 percent from the field and had 37 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

Trey Mundlien scored a game-high 19 points in the loss. Lyman shot 32 percent from the field and 18 rebounds and 25 turnovers.

CHAMBERLAIN — The Chamberlain boys’ basketball team defeated Douglas 68-46 in the East/West Classic Saturday in Chamberlain.

Skyler Bertram led the Cubs with 18 points in the win. Reuben Estes added 11 points, while Hudson Priebe added 10 points for Chamberlain.

Caleb Briggs had a team-high 11 points for Douglas.

The Cubs (2-1) play Little Wound at 4 p.m. today at Northern State in Aberdeen.

MOBRIDGE — The Burke/South Central boys’ basketball team picked up its second win of the season, topping Timber Lake 49-28 in the Rotary Classic in Mobridge.

Zach Sebern had a game-high 12 points for the Cougars, while Sam Hazen finished with eight points and 12 rebounds. Owen Andrews had eight points for BSC.

Timber Lake was led by Nicholas Bad Warrior, who scored nine points for the Panthers.

The Cougars (2-3) play Colome at noon today in Colome.

CHAMBERLAIN — Platte-Geddes topped Belle Fourche 58-42 in boys’ high school basketball action at the East/West Classic Saturday in Chamberlain.

The Black Panthers were led by Coby Johnson with 21 points, while Kole Heller added 14 points.

The Broncs got 18 points from Jordan Mitchell in the loss.

PG (4-0) plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Jan. 7 in Plankinton.

Scotland 68, Alcester-Hudson 63

ALCESTER — The Scotland boys’ basketball team topped Alcester-Hudson 68-63 Saturday in Alcester.

The Highlanders were led by Shay Bloch with 19 points, while Seth Ireland and Tanner Skorepa finished with 15 points apiece. Skorepa had a team-high seven rebounds, while Anthony Walloch added 12 points.

AH was led by Sam Jensen with 16 points.

Scotland (2-2) plays Centerville Friday in Centerville.

WINNER —The Colome boys’ basketball team topped Newell 54-46 Saturday at the Snowball Classic in Winner.

The Cowboys were led by Reed Harter with 21 points, while Terrance Kinzer added 17 points and nine rebounds.

Prestyn Novak scored a game-high 27 points for Newell in the loss.

Colome plays Burke/South Central at noon today in Colome.
