April death ruled accidental due to overdose
The death of a Mitchell man who died in April has been deemed accidental.
Dustin Lee Jones, 33, was found dead April 14 in his home. An autopsy report revealed his death was due to illegal drug use, said Detective Lt. Don Everson of the Mitchell Police Division.
The autopsy showed Jones had a lethal amount of fentanyl in his system, which is a controlled prescription substance. Law enforcement found no evidence that he had a prescription for the pain-relieving narcotic.
Everson said Jones' story could help others.
"I feel it's important to release that the cause of death is due to illegal drug use because we might be able to save someone else's life," Everson said. "I'm hoping if people out there using illegal drugs see this story, they will realize the same thing can happen to them if they continue to use drugs."
Everson added that there were no signs of foul play in Jones' death, which was reported to police around 7:30 a.m. April 14 by a person who knew him.
