Amateur baseball team joins Eighth Annual Greg Wagner Memorial Event Saturday
ALEXANDRIA — There is a full schedule of activities in Alexandria Saturday, and the Alexandria Angels are excited about doing their part for the Eighth Annual Greg Wagner Memorial Event, which begins at 10 a.m. at the baseball complex.
At this year’s event, the amateur baseball team will be helping with the race, serving meals and providing entertainment at the conclusion of the event, as the reigning State B amateur baseball champion Angels host 2012 champion Parkston Mudcats.
“We’re excited to help with the fundraiser and feel strongly in supporting and recognizing fallen military and fallen soldiers,” Angels manager and event committee member Chris Marek said. “It’s a positive event with a great purpose.”
Proceeds will go to the Alexandria Angels and the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps thousands of injured soldiers return home from war and provides assistance to their families.
The walk is held every year in honor of Staff Sgt. Greg Wagner, an Alexandria native who died in 2006 while serving in Iraq.
In previous years, the event was run by the Red Cross and Mitchell’s Court Appointed Special Advocates, in conjunction with the Wagner family. But this year, a group of 15-20 people, including the Wagner family and friends, came together to plan and coordinate the event in its eighth year.
“We sent out letters for donations to people from Alexandria and Mitchell and they’ve been supportive,” said Mitchell resident Deb Wagner, Greg’s sister in-law. “We’ve had a huge response from people in the surrounding areas. Everyone has been very helpful.”
Last year, the event brought 180 participants and raised more than $10,000 for Mitchell’s CASA, which aids the children of families involved in legal difficulties.
Deb Wagner said the last count, which was two weeks ago, for registered participants was 100. She added more people usually register the day of the event.
Saturday’s race registration begins at 9 a.m. with the race beginning at 10 a.m. The fee is $25, which includes the 6K walk and a meal. Registration for the memorial ride begins at 11:30 a.m. with the ride at 1 p.m. and is $25 for a meal and the ride.
The eventful day ends with the Angels’ season opener at 5 p.m. in Alexandria. Admittance is $5 unless already purchased through the event’s early-bird registration.
“It’s a good event for the community of Alexandria,” Angels player Jordan Gau said. “We’re excited to help with the event and hopefully, we’ll have a good crowd at the game.”
