Amateur baseball roundup: No. 5 Dimock/Emery tops No. 6 Salem
SALEM -- Josh Engquist struck out 18 batters as Dimock/Emery topped Salem 9-1 in an amateur baseball game Tuesday in Salem.
Dimock/Emery is ranked fifth and Salem is sixth in the final amateur baseball poll, which was released Tuesday evening.
Engquist was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits and three walks in eight innings.
Jason Schmidt had four hits with a double, Josh Schmidt had two hits with a double and Tyson Kayser added four hits for the Raptors.
Salem's losing pitcher was Zach Schrank, giving up seven runs in two innings. Brian Duxbury recorded a double and a run scored in the loss.
Dimock/Emery (21-7) plays Platte at 8 p.m. Thursday in Emery.
Mount Vernon 10, Platte 4
MOUNT VERNON -- Brian Vermeulen went 5-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Mount Vernon Cardinals over the Platte Killer Tomatoes 10-4 in a Sunshine League game Tuesday in Mount Vernon.
Kirby Fuerst earned the win for the Cardinals pitching eight innings giving up four runs off five hits with 11 strikeouts.
Nate Zens went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Fuerst added a double for Mount Vernon.
Taking the loss for Platte was Audie Kuipers. He gave up 10 runs on 12 hits in eight innings. Hayden Kuiper had a double for Platte.
Mount Vernon (4-11 SL) plays Corsica/Stickney at 8 p.m. Thursday in Mount Vernon.
Freeman 9, Menno 3
FREEMAN -- Austin Smidt earned the win for Freeman as they topped Menno 9-3 in a South Central League baseball game Tuesday in Freeman.
Smidt pitched the complete game giving up three runs on six hits, striking out six.
Mitch Wollmann went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Freeman, while Jake Weier finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The losing pitcher for Menno was Jay Thaler. He pitched eight innings, giving up six runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
Tom Sattler finished with two hits for Menno.
Freeman (10-7 SCL) plays Yankton at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Yankton.
