Amateur baseball roundup: Mudcats, Platte earn state tourney berths
PARKSTON -- The Parkston Mudcats punched a ticket to the state amateur baseball tournament by beating Corsica/Stickney 4-0 Thursday in Parkston.
Brady Nolz earned the win on the mound for the Mudcats as he only allowed two hits while pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Pat Harris had two hits and two RBIs and Jeff Harris added two hits to lead the Mudcats.
Aaron Groeneweg took the loss for Corsica/Stickney. Groeneweg also had the team's only two hits with a double and a single.
Parkston advances to the state amateur tournament, which begins Wednesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, and Corsica/Stickney plays Mount Vernon at 6 p.m. today in Parkston for a spot in the state tournament.
Platte 6, Mount Vernon 5
PARKSTON -- The Platte Killer Tomatoes scored in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to beat Mount Vernon 6-5 on Thursday in a District 5 amateur baseball game.
With the win, Platte earned a berth to the Class B state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Mitchell. Platte had seven hits and three errors, while Mount Vernon recorded five hits and two errors.
Hayden Kuiper was the winning pitcher as he struck out seven in nine innings. The losing pitcher was Kirby Fuerst.
Jordan Johnson had a double and single for Platte and Mike Buitenbos added two singles.
For Mount Vernon, Chase Hetland recorded a solo home run. Fuerst had a two-run homer and Nate Zens had a two-RBI single in the loss.
Mount Vernon plays Corsica/Stickney at 6 p.m. today in Parkston for a state tournament berth.
District 6 tournament
Tabor 5, Freeman 3
FREEMAN -- Tabor beat Freeman 5-3 in a District 6B tournament game Thursday in Freeman.
With the win, Tabor earned a berth to the state tournament, while Freeman plays a play-in game against Avon at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Tabor was led by Rob Keppen, who had three hits, while Nate Kloucek added a double and a hit.
Freeman's Jake Weier had four hits including a home run, while Derek Wieman added two hits.
Irene 10, Avon 0
FREEMAN -- Irene defeated Avon 10-0 in a District 6 amateur baseball game Thursday in Freeman.
Irene earned a berth to the state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Mitchell. Avon will face Freeman at 5 p.m. Saturday for a state tournament spot. Crofton and Wynot will play for the district championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Irene had eight hits and no errors, while Avon recorded three hits and two errors. The winning pitcher was Andrew Hora.
