Amateur baseball roundup: Mount Vernon edges Tripp/Delmont
MOUNT VERNON -- The Mount Vernon Cardinals picked up their second win of the Sunshine League season with an 8-7 victory over Tripp/Delmont Friday in Mount Vernon.
Chase Hetland pitched all nine innings for the Cardinals (2-10, 2-10 SL), allowing seven runs, one earned on 10 hits and struck out nine.
Brian Vermeulen, Hetland, Deric Denning and Robbie Kazi each finished with two hits. Hetland added a team-high three RBIs.
Tyler Payer started on the mound for the Indee Jacks. He threw 7 ⅓ innings, allowing six runs, three earned on 12 hits and struck out six.
Dylan Peters finsihed 3-for-5 for Tripp/Delmont with two RBIs. Jeff Friman and Tom Heisinger each added two hits in the loss.
Mount Vernon plays the Parkston Bullheads at 2 p.m. Sunday in Parkston.
Freeman 10, Scotland 6
SCOTLAND -- The Freeman amateur baseball team defeated Scotland 10-6 Friday in a South Central League contest.
The losing pitcher was Paul Plante, giving up 11 hits in eight innings. He struck out one.
Jake Weir got the win on the mound, giving up 13 hits and striking out three in eight innings.
For Freeman, Derek Weiman had a home run and a single and Allan Scherschligt added two doubles.
Plante recorded a double and two singles, Michael Kronaizl had a double and a single and Kraig Kronaizl and Levi Geiman each had two hits for Scotland. Wyatt Brown added a two-run home run in the loss.
Freeman (8-7) hosts Lesterville Sunday, while Scotland (0-14) plays Tabor at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Tabor.
