Amateur baseball roundup: Mad Dogs' season ends with loss to Pierre
The season came to a close for the Mitchell Mad Dogs in an elimination game against Pierre at the State A Regional Tournament Sunday at Drake Field in Mitchell.
The Mad Dogs lost to the Rattlers 7-0, with Joey Fitzgerald taking the loss on the mound for Mitchell. He threw a complete game and was picked up by Vermillion to play in the Class A state tournament starting Friday in Renner. Derek Miller, who had played for the Mad Dogs following the end of the Mitchell Legion season, was picked up by Yankton for the state tournament.
The Class A tournament starts in Renner and the final six games will be played in Mitchell starting Aug 15.
Pierre moved to play Yankton for a spot in the state tournament after topping Mitchell. Yankton won 6-3 to advance. Vermillion won the Regional with a win over Yankton Saturday and will also be in the state tournament.
Avon 5, Freeman 4
FREEMAN -- The Avon amateur baseball team secured a spot in the Class B state tournament with a 5-4 win over Freeman in the District 6B tournament Saturday in Freeman.
Down 4-1 heading into the eighth inning, Avon rallied for the win. Jeff Sad hit an RBI single to score Josh Cihak in the ninth inning for the winning run. Freeman loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning but failed to score.
Sand and Cihak each had two hits in the win for Avon, which will play Alexandria in the first round of the State B Amateur Baseball Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
Lee Scherschligt, Kyle Weier and Jake Weier each had two hits for Freeman in the loss, which ended the team's season.
Crofton (Neb.) topped Wynot (Neb.) 5-3 in the District 6B title game Saturday in Freeman. Both team will play in the state B tournament.
