Alm has team-high kills to lead South
Sometimes an all-star game is just plain fun.
Highlighted by long, crowd-pleasing rallies, players in the South Dakota High School All-Star volleyball match put on a clinic Wednesday night at the Northern State Barnett Center. The South held off the North for a 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-20, 25-10) win.
"We told the girls just to go out and have fun," said South head coach Lindsey Fathke, of Bon Homme. "It's one of those things, you have all-stars competing against all-stars. It's the best of the best. They just worked really well together."
Future University of Iowa player Taylin Alm, of Mitchell, had 11 kills to lead the South offensively.
That internal chemistry pushed the South squad out to an early 12-4 lead to start the night en-route to a 25-18 win in set one, but a 13-4 run by the North team midway through set two really set the tone of the night.
The South righted its own ship with early leads in the third and fourth sets. Both teams slogged through some sloppy points in the third before playing a crisp, clean fourth set.
South's Erin Benson (Chester) and Ellie Benson (Sioux Falls Washington) had 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
Former Warner High School standout Carly Rozell, who is headed to Dakota State this fall, finished with a match-best 18 kills for the North. Future DSU teammate Hope Juntenen, of Hamlin, added nine, while Haylee Biel chipped in six.
Kelly McCarty (Huron) finished with 11 assists, and Ellie Rabenburg (Mobridge/Pollock) led the way with 11 digs.
