About 100 birds on display at SD parrot festival
BELLE FOURCHE (AP) — Several parrots, toucans and macaws are on display at a birds festival in western South Dakota.
The Rapid City Journal reports that more 100 birds are being showcased at the Parrot Festival at the Black Hills Parrot Welfare & Education Center near Belle Fourche. The event is free and runs through Sunday.
The birds are from all over the world and 30 of them are listed as endangered species. The birds are being housed at the center because it is the only rehab facility in the nation for exotic birds.
The newspaper reports that the nonprofit center has an operating budget of around $60,000 each year. The annual festival is the center's largest fundraising event.
