65 mph wind gusts possible Thursday
The Mitchell area is included in a high wind warning today.
The warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected, with sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph and gusts of 58 mph or more that could cause property damage.
The National Weather Service reported Wednesday afternoon that the warning would be in effect from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. today.
Strong northwest winds were expected to develop overnight and increase significantly this morning. The strongest winds are expected to impact south-central South Dakota by daybreak today and expand eastward into northwest Iowa through the morning. The winds are expected to slowly diminish tonight.
This morning’s winds will average 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph. By this afternoon, winds will likely increase, averaging 35 to 45 mph with gusts of 60 to 65 mph possible.
Scattered snow showers could accompany the strong winds, especially from the Mitchell and Sioux Falls areas into northwest Iowa in the late morning and afternoon. There could be areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
