RAPID CITY (AP) — At 1 pound, 9 ounces, a newborn is the smallest ever born at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Brielle Alexandra Taylor was due Dec. 18 but arrived prematurely on Sept. 1, her mom, Nirelle Taylor, told KOTA-TV (http://bit.ly/15K6e7z ).

She was 24 1/2 weeks pregnant.

"It was just really scary because I was hanging out with my friend and out of nowhere, you feel your water break," Taylor said.

Baby Brielle's hands and feet are just bigger than a penny, and her diapers are half the size of normal newborns'. The focus now is keeping her stable and making sure her oxygen levels are OK, Taylor said.

Taylor still hasn't been able to hold her daughter.

"I can stick my hands into the incubator and hold her hand. I'm not supposed to rub because her skin is so thin," she said.

It will be three to four months before Brielle can go home. Taylor visits three times a day, but leaving isn't easy.

"The first day when I was leaving here, it was the hardest day because I don't want to leave her at all, so many what-ifs were popping in my head," Taylor said.
