Mitchell Thirsty's set to move
One of Mitchell's late-night hot spots is on the move.
The Mitchell Planning Commission approved a plan for Thirsty's to eventually move from the Palace Mall to the former home of the County Fair Banquet Hall and Rita's Place. The new location is a short walk from the current location.
"Time for some renovation and remodeling," Commission Chair Jay Larson asked.
According to architect Larry Jirsa, who abstained from his duties as a planning commissioner for a portion of the meeting, the two older businesses near The Village Bowl will be connected as Thirsty's moves in. Jirsa said a new bar will be added, as well as other general renovations.
The move adds another vacancy at the Palace Mall, which lost anchor store JCPenney in 2017. It's unclear when the move will be official, however, as that was not announced on Monday when the early version of the plan was approved.
At the meeting at City Hall, Mitchell City Councilman Dan Allen offered up some history about the new Thirsty's location.
"Years ago, it used to be a bar," Allen said.
The plan was unanimously approved, and Larson reminded those in attendance that the plan is not subject to future debate.
"This does not go before the council," Larson said. "We are the final (vote)."
